Starring: Anupam Kher, Akshaye Khanna
This movie is about one of India's most educated Prime Ministers, who has a string of qualifications in Finance and Economics to his credit. The first half is very promising, funny at times and an engaging watch. Soon the movie stops being about the eponymous PM and more about Sanjaya Baru (he wrote the book - The Accidental Prime Minister on which this movie is based). The movie focuses more on his contributions to the PMO and to Dr Manmohan Singh.
It delves too much into the Gandhi family's control on the PMO and fails or purposefully ignores to show the various achievements that the former PM had achieved in his tenure such as the RTI act, introduction to SEZs, and the proposal to introduce FDI that was met with resistance from the opposition... just to name a few.
The only achievement that has been shown is the Nuclear Deal and that is an obvious choice as it was supported by BJP then in the Opposition.
Performance :
Anupam Kher as Dr. Manmohan Singh looks believable but the acting is caricaturish; not what's expected from an actor his calibre.
Akshaye Khanna steals the show with his performance as Sanjaya Baru.
The rest of the supporting cast have short roles and have done justice to theirs.
Conclusion :
The movie doesn't do justice to the the person that it should have been about. Instead it plays more like a propaganda movie and election pitch; which with the timing it most definitely is. There's too much focus on the wrongs that Congress did to Dr. Manmohan Singh. It fails to portray the achievements of the former PM. Due to the flawed nature of the title character's portrayal and the only redeeming factor being Akshaye Khanna's performance, I would just rate it a 2 out of 5.
